Taylor Paziuk has made the leap to
Junior A hockey in impressive fashion, having already made his way onto the Capitals’ top line in his rookie season. Capitals assistant coach Kelly Shields
says the key to Paziuk’s success on the ice stems from something related to his academic excellence: learning ability. “He is an intelligent player,” explains
Shields. “He’s one of those kids where you can give him a piece of information and he’ll put it into his game. He sees hockey as a learning process.” Adept learning is a skill Paziuk brings
from the classroom to the rink. In high school, Paziuk earned an academic scholarship to the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, and has spent his entire academic life on the principal’s list. “Anything that can help me move for- ward in hockey is good,” says Paziuk, ex-

plaining the importance of education for a hockey player. “If a school sees that I have good grades, maybe it’ll help them take a second look at me.” Paziuk’s motivation to succeed in
school and in hockey are closely linked. “It’s about commitment,” says Paziuk.
“You set your mind to do well in school, and that carries over to the ice. That persistence combined with his
outstanding scholastic achievements are what Paziuk hopes will earn him a ticket to an NCAA Division I scholarship.
