Mark Soares is a star at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay

Soares is another recipient of the scholar- ship. The 24-year old was a key piece to the Burnaby Express’s RBC Cup run in 2006, and is now in his fourth season with the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. While the BCHL is best known for pro-
viding talent for the NCAA, Soares and Ruel serve as two prime examples of play- ers who have succeeded without making the move south. Others, like former Powell River Kings
captain Mark McKamey, are using their awards to help fund an education far from home. McKamey is currently a freshman at the Wentworth Institute, a prestigious engi- neering and management college located in downtown Boston. Scholarship winners are eligible for as-
sistance towards as many as five years of post-secondary education, so long as they continue to study and play competi- tive hockey. Recipients are chosen based on academic and sporting excellence and community service, and are selected annu- ally by a committee that includes notable Canucks alumni like Burnaby Express gen- eral manager Darcy Rota.
