Blythswood. For the suspended lampshades in the main 120-cover restaurant and cocktail bar, Hamilton worked with Dorval Lighting. Their collaboration incorporates black and white photographic prints sourced from former RSAC members on the inside of the shade, complemented by a red fringe trim. Furniture is designed in partnership with Modus Furniture and upholstered in Harris Tweed, a fabric used extensively throughout. Considered a luxurious commodity used by eminent fashion houses, according to Hamilton, Harris Tweed had not been used in a hotel setting for decades and so was the “perfect fit”. Hamilton travelled personally to the Outer Hebrides – where the cloth is handwoven in the cottages of the islanders – to select a palette of twelve patterns and colourways that could be mixed and matched throughout the hotel. The ensuing material has been used across curtains, light fittings, headboards, and chairs.

In the cocktail bar, it covers the quirky stools that represent the back of a gentleman’s jacket – the type of gentlemen that would have once convened here – complete with silky lining. In the restaurant, it upholsters the deep buttoned dining chairs and sofas, as well as the plumped cushions. Blythswood’s conference and events space


is located in the basement of the hotel, its semi-pavement level offering a degree of natural light. The three Monte Carlo Suites and Clubroom can be hired individually or combined as a large open plan space with adjoining private screening room. The former Rally Bar, named after the Monte Carlo Rally that started from Blythswood Square in 1955, has also been reinstated as part of the planning conditions. Its design features rich wood panelling and original fireplaces. A lounge bar has also been installed on the first floor offering views of the square.
