HOTEL REVIEW
pool’s sky light and catches the reflective tiles which line the pool, turning the water a shimmering shade of green, blue and copper as the day progresses.
Despite the rough and ready nature of its
location, Peng Loh appears to have caught Bethnal Green at a time when the area is on the up. Nearby Vyner Street is home to several cutting edge art galleries, and Loh has sought to capitalise on the burgeoning arts scene in the East End by enlisting the support of not-for-profit organisation Artsadmin to run an open commission scheme asking up-and- coming local artists to create works for the new hotel. Restaurants such as Bistrotheque, Les Trois Garçons and Laxeiro also draw people to the area. For families, the nearby Museum of Childhood, not to mention the self-catering facilities of Town Hall Hotel’s apartment rooms, should prove appealing.
Nonetheless, Peng Loh denies that he knew any of this would happen when he first took on the project. “Gentrification never entered my mind – I would have done it even if this was much further out of central London, because of the unique nature of the building. I never thought I’d find a building like this but once I did I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.” And despite the changing nature of Bethnal
Green, its the hotel’s design that is the real draw here. Fusing Edwardian, Art Deco and contemporary elements whilst ensuring that the building retained its original splendour was one of architect’s biggest challenges. “The building plays with the division and connection between old and new and is a reinvention as well as a restoration – one which we hope will be a treasured landmark for East London,” concludes Michel da Costa Goncalves.
