old English Gentlemen’s Club – the type of place where senior English civil servants and ‘tai pans’ would once have relaxed after work over vintage port and cigars. The high-vaulted ceilings, wooden trusses, crystal chandeliers, old leather sofas and heavy velvet curtains create a plush, colonial ambience. The old horse stables of the Marine
Police HQ have also been reinvigorated as The Stables Grill. Behind two large antique wood stable doors is an interior hewn from worn wood. Lights hung from the ceiling are cleverly concealed in suspended leather cylinders (each over one metre in length) which were originally used to transport freshly sheared sheep’s wool in France in the 1950s. The walls are decorated with wooden panels which were carefully salvaged from the deck of a 50-year-old Chinese ship. Moving upstairs,
the theme of restored wood and warm tones continues, but is accented by the glow of hanging red ‘egg lamps’, like those found over the street stalls in the traditional local markets. Finally, The Parlour is a glamorous and
grand Chinoiserie lounge with its roots in the traditional parlours of 19th century England. The Parlour has three distinctive rooms, where east and west meet with a colourful explosion. The walls of the East Room are decorated with beautiful hand-painted canvases depicting Victoria Harbour at the turn of the 19th century. At the opposite end of The Parlour in the West Room, Brighton’s historic Royal Pavilion is depicted, another example of King George IV’s passion for Chinoiserie. In the middle room is the striking Dragon Bar where dramatic dragons clutch elaborate Chinese ‘shadow’ lanterns, swooping and diving against a dramatic pink sunset sky.
