Planning Begins for Fall Community Food Summit C

onsider working with oth- ers to improve the quality

and sustainability of our area’s food production. Local food enthusiast Kimberly Cavalier is inviting interested volun- teers to join Mario Yanez, director and founder of Earth Learning, and Co-director Elena Naranjo, September 10-12, to begin planning the Greater Everglades Community Food Summit (CFS) in Naples this fall. Cavalier says the activities will forward the momentum gained from the Greater Everglades CFS held two months ago in Miami. “Yanez and Naranjo will share information and ways a summit can galvanize our communities to bring about a more just and resilient local food system,” she advises. On Friday afternoon, after Yanez and Naranjo visit some lo-

cal farms and potential sites for a summit, they will attend a living foods potluck dinner, open to potential supporters, at 6 p.m., at the residence of Lisa and Mark Tomasi. At 2 p.m., Saturday, at Cavalier’s residence, the two experts will lead a workshop to share their experiences and offer further guidance on how to host a summit. Sunday will feature related activities. Yanez, who is also co-founder of the Greater Everglades

CFS, is certified in permaculture design and holds an MBA in finance and management and an MA in environmental studies. A senior fellow with the Environmental Leadership Program, he attributes his transformational learning journey to his studies at Genesis Farm, Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center, and with Joanna Macy and The Work that Reconnects. Founded in 2003, Earth Learning is a community-based

organization that inspires people, ventures, projects and ac- tivities dedicated to ecological learning and sustainability in the Greater Everglades bio-region. The Local Food Enthusiasts Meetup group arranges for visits to local organic farmers, growers and restaurants that serve locally grown organic foods, farmers’ markets and festivals.

Potluck dinner: $5. Workshop: Free. For more info and to register (required and space is limited), visit Meetup.com/Lo- cal-Food-Enthusiasts or call 239-263-3966. Also visit Earth- Learning.org.
