type of change will require a true paradigm shift from our local governments to be able to sign on for a deal like this. Although Low Impact Development has been utilized in other parts of the country, it’s a relatively new thing here in the Houston area. So it will take some real effort on the part of the real estate community to gain enough traction to get our municipalities and counties on board.

One organization that seems to be up to the challenge is the Houston Land/ Water Sustainability Forum. HLWSF recently held a Low Impact Development design competition with the goal of educating the local construction and development communities on Low Impact Development, or LID, and to expose our local governing bodies

to the environmental and marketing benefits of adopting these design practices. My friend Kolby, who participated in the competition, said they presented these concepts to the City of Houston and Harris County where it was actually pretty well received.

So, maybe this is the first step in winning the approval of our local governments on what could be the wave of the future for stormwater design here in the Houston area.

If you’re

interested in learning more about Low Impact Development and its benefits, contact my friend Kolby (kdavidson@davidsonla.com), and be sure to visit HLWSF’s Web site at: www. houstonlwsforum.org. In the meantime, can anyone spot me a twenty for lunch? I’ll pay you back. I promise.
