What we're up to...


GHBA 2nd Quarter Report Card—2010 The GHBA staff is always busy looking for ways to improve members services, advocacy and education. Following is a quick look at what the association has been up to lately.


Government Affairs • GHBA staff and members continue to meet with the Houston-area Congressional Delegation focusing on acquisition, development, and construction financing and creating legislation to promote the residential construction industry.


• In April, GHBA participated in the NAHB Legislative Conference with more than 20 members spending a day on Capitol Hill.


• Members and staff continue to work locally on issues including historic preservation, permitting, code changes, environmental and development- based issues throughout the region.


• GHBA’s new voluntary green building program, Green Built Gulf Coast (GBGC) was officially launched on June 1, 2010 and signed up five participating builders and remodelers in the first month. The program expects to have 5,000 homes built to the standard in the first year.


• HOME-PAC broke the $100,000 mark in the 2nd quarter of 2010. We hope to hit $125,000 raised by end of the third quarter.


Education • 27 people earned their Certified Green Professional designation in April.


• 19 people enrolled in the CAPS program. • The Lead Renovation, Repair & Painting Certification class was offered five times with 102 people attending.


Councils & Divisions • Associate Council awarded six scholarships to members' college- bound students.


• Remodelors Council launched the 2010 Houston Remodeling Guide at the New

Home & Remodeling Show— circulation 20,000+ consumers annually.


• 2010 AIA Sandcastle Competition—a joint effort with Remodelors and Custom Builder Councils—had a record turn-out.


• BABA held its annual golf tournament in May, and also saw a tremendous turnout of players and sponsors!


• The Sales & Marketing Council held a successful networking event at Crush in The Woodlands. Attendees included volume, custom builders, remodelers, associates and SMC members. The response showed the true support for the 2010 initiative of cross-pollination of committees and councils to attend various functions.


Benefit Homes • Westin Homes broke ground on the second 2010 GHBA Benefit Home in Discovery at Spring Trails.


• Presented charities with the proceeds from Trendmaker Homes/Woodlands Development Co. Benefit Home. Total of $119,916 donated.


Special Events • In June, GHBA hosted Mid-Year Forecast Luncheon. Dr. Mark Dotzour, chief economist and director of research for the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas spoke to 750 guests. His research findings and comments have been published in the Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, USA Today and Business Week.


Communications • New look and format for the weekly GHBA online newsletter.


Tradeshows


NEW HOME & REMODELING SHOW • Nearly 5,000 consumers (double the 2009 attendance) attended the 18th Annual New Home & Remodeling Show.


• Huge sponsorship by Frontier Custom Builders, which built a spectacular 3,500 square foot showcase home in the center of the exhibit hall.


• 145 exhibitors filled more than 170 booths and featured areas. Approximately 225 participants included exhibitors, sponsors, seminar speakers and volunteers, such as donors to the Green Built Gulf Coast display, HomeAid Houston’s Project Playhouse and Radio Disney’s live family show.


• 90% of the attendees redeemed free tickets distributed at 30 Best Buy stores. The free ticket promotion was sponsored by Builders Mechanical A/C & Heating, Sherwin-Williams Paint Company, Frontier Custom Builders, the Houston Chronicle, Houston Lifestyles & Homes, The Greensheet, Senior News and Clear Channel’s 9-5-0 Radio Mojo.


• Survey results show attendees were focused, and ready to buy, build or remodel a home.


GHBA PRODUCT EXPO – 2010 • The Trade Show Committee has moved the 8th Annual GHBA Product Expo from October 21 to November 18 of this year to give members who wish to attend the Sunbelt Builders Show in Grapevine on October 14-17 more time between the two events.
