Fishing the Vedder

When you come down out of the mountains, just outside of Hope, B.C., the mountain valleys open up into the Fraser Valley flood plain and the lower mainland – some of the best, most fertile farm-land around. The mountain water systems converge here too, and rush down into the valley flood


plain. The Vedder River, The Chilliwack River, The Fraser River, Fishing on the Chilliwack River, Camping in Cultus (other sites) Chilliwack offers some of North America's best fishing. Catch enormous sturgeon on the Fraser River or angle for salmon and steelhead on the Chilliwack/Vedder River. Local lakes teem with freshwater trout. Other game fish in the area: wild bull trout, cutthroat, steelhead, rainbow, chinook salmon, mountain whitefish and others. In late September, coho


salmon start running up the Vedder along with the fall run chinook. The coho fishing continues to get better until it peaks in late October. It's still possible to get a bright coho in early December, just when the steelhead fishing is ready to start. Winter steelhead start entering the Vedder in late November and continue running until May.


In June, summer run chinook salmon start their migration up stream. Most of these chinook are "white springs", introduced to the Vedder from stock taken from the Harrison. Runs have been hatchery
