On the Bench –

Naramata Wineries Written by Melissa MacDougall

Exuding a certain old-world charm, the Naramata Bench, located on the east side of Okanagan Lake and approximately one hour south of Kelowna, is a haven for any wine connoisseur. Comprised of 22 boutique wineries with lush vineyards stretching toward the horizon, The Bench has become a serious rival for the infamous Napa Valley in the North American wine circuit. Rich soil balanced by an abundance of light

and typically long frost-free autumns produce world-renowned wine, and as such, has given the Okanagan Valley its popularity based on this alone. Once filled with orchards of peach,

cherry and apple trees, the agricultural direction of the Naramata Bench has morphed into a new dynamic while continuing to keep the Okanagan Valley on the map for its prized commodity – only this time, the recognition comes from its grapes. Elephant Island, however, marries the former and present focus together, producing delicious desert wines derived from apricot, pear and black currant.

Touring companies such as Envy Wine Tours, based out of Penticton, have taken the initiative to make The Bench more accessible and informative to visitors. The picturesque drive through the rolling hills that Naramata is known for is certain to leave a lasting impression, and the organic feel emanating from the rows of grape vines imparts a sense of rustic beauty reminiscent of Spain's Catalonia.
