with guest ranches offering western adventures that include horseback riding and range drives.

The area is rich in western pioneer culture and mining history, and The Red Bridge, which stretches across the Similkameen River. This covered bridge is a beautiful reminder of that heritage. The wooden structure was built in 1907 by the Victoria, Vancouver and Eastern Railroad during the gold mining era. One of the few covered bridges remaining in North America, the Red Bridge is a vivid reminder of the bygone years when the Vancouver, Victoria and Eastern (V.V.&E.) Railway ran up the Valley. Originally one of three in the lower valley, it's the only one left standing.

Another spectacular historic site is the Keremeos Columns, situated perfectly at the foot of K Mountain on the banks of the Simikameen River. These tall columns of basalt are a result of volcanic activity some 30 million years ago. The magnificent columns are 30-meters

high and form a 100-meter-wide cliff. They are made up of slowly cooled lava, with the characteristic vertically- hexagonal columnar jointing of basalt, and grandly loom above the surrounding forest. This is the same Geological phenomenon that has formed the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland and the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming.

Major provincial parks in the Similkameen are Bromley Rock Provincial Park east of Princeton, Stemwinder Provincial Park west of Hedley, Keremeos Columns Provincial Park north of Keremeos, and Cathedral Provincial Park on the border with Washington.
