Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program


A significant link between mindfulness and stress reduction is centered within the mind/body connection studied by neuroscientists who have established that thoughts and emotions are interconnected with the body’s physical processes. Mindfulness allows you “to be” with a wide range of experiences. Viktor


Frankl, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, wrote, “Between stimulus and re- sponse, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response is our growth and our freedom.” While imprisoned, Frankl provided com- fort and healing to those around him, underscoring that with awareness, everyone is free to choose their response. Becoming aware of stress and how you interact with it the first step in choosing new responses. In 1979, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., a molecular biologist with a long-term medi-


tation practice, founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Since then, accumulated research has demonstrated the benefits of mindfulness in dealing with stress, anxiety, depres- sion, substance abuse, pain and illness. Today, more than 250 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs are in major medical centers throughout the U.S.
