Motivated by the thousands of broken surfboards that lie in landfills, surfboard shaper/glasser Kipp Denslow and de- signer/blogger Ed Lewis created The Leucadia Project, an initiative that recycles broken surfboards and turns them into body surf hand planes. “The idea of these once-beloved boards ending up in the trash just because they got snapped bugged me,” says Lewis. “After some thought and inspiration from other wooden hand plane shapers, Kipp and I started playing with the idea of turn- ing these old boards into something new, something that we could reshape into a new beloved friend of the wave-riding persuasion.”
If you have a broken board that is headed for the trash, contact The Leucadia Project at
TheLeucadiaProject.com. Lewis and Denslow will happily take it off your hands to repurpose and send back into the water where it belongs.
