Creative, Healthful Food Tips

Ideas for Camping Kids on the Go by Peg Windisch

Start thinking “outside the lunchbox” when it comes to packing your happy daycamper’s

healthy summer lunches and snacks. Their summer experience is all about discovery and learning, so why stick to the script when it comes to mealtime?

Changing Choices The nuts, dried fruits and veggies your child didn’t like yesterday may be his new fave tomorrow, because taste buds continue to change. Request that your child try something a second time, while keeping an open mind.

Frozen Smoothies Have your child pick out their favorite fruits and yogurt and help you make a smoothie for lunch or a snack. Freeze the smoothie overnight or make a few for the week and store them in plastic cups or containers. Remove one from the freezer in the morning and pack it away. It’s likely to be perfectly slushy by lunchtime and a big hit for both taste and nutrition.

Skip the Bread Transform the mundane sandwich by just rolling up slices of turkey, lettuce and cheese. Stick a toothpick through to hold it together. For a grain, provide variety by packing a bag of baked potato, rice or bean chips.

Check the Sugar Be aware that the amount of sugar in the juice that you buy can vary greatly. If you purchase juice in a plastic bottle, dilute it with water to make it lower in sugar content and more hydrating.

Dessert Is a Reward If you are concerned that your younger campers are eating their dessert in- stead of their nutritional foods, tell them you will serve dessert at home after camp, as long as they have finished eating their healthy lunch.

Speak Up for Healthy Snacks If the camp serves snacks or lunches, don’t be shy about making requests or suggestions to the camp director ahead of time. Make it clear that your prefer- ence is healthy foods, and be specific. The camp directors may be able to order special lunches, as long as you give them time to plan ahead.
