oday’s cold laser technology offers individuals with muscle spasms and joint pain the opportunity to experi- ence relief without medication, supplements, needles
or bodywork. The cold laser, which causes no negative side effects, uses coherent light to painlessly treat acupuncture points and is safe to use as a complementary treatment with other types of holistic therapies. Since receiving U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in 2002, chiropractors and other health practitioners have been using the therapy to provide relief from headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint pain, muscle spasms and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain; accelerate wound healing; speed nerve regeneration; and relieve stiffness and inflammation associated with arthri- tis, back and neck pain. Cold laser therapy may also encourage faster healing from both acute injuries and chronic health issues. Medical cold lasers used by healthcare professionals emit red light waves of a specific wave length that penetrates from three- eighths of an inch to a few inches beneath the skin, targeting inflamed tissue and acupuncture points. Most lasers sold for home use are less powerful and penetrate superficially beneath the skin. The light from a cold laser is absorbed into the target tis- sue better than other types of light therapy, such as infrared, and uses state-of-the-art technology. It is an especially effec- tive treatment option for patients who have hypersensitivity to pain or heat, since it does not produce heat like the lasers used for hair removal or surgery. Numerous studies demonstrate the effectiveness of cold laser treatment, including one cited in the Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences that showed the therapy was more effective than a TENS electrotherapy device to help pain. Because cold laser therapy is painless and effective, it can be used to treat adults and children for a large variety of health conditions.
