Journalists ride and drive latest John Deere models during visit to German factory

AS a member of the press it is always welcoming to see sneak previews of new machinery due to be released on the market. On a recent trip to Mannheim, Germany, the invited press were lucky enough to get a real ‘touchy feely’ look and ride of the new additions to the John Deere family.
In the first of a series of four work stations we were introduced to the new concept 7400 TerrainCut mower, designed as a rotary alternative to the company’s established 2653B utility mower. Amongst other features is an innovative ‘Width on Demand’ system. This allows the operator to adjust the working width of cut from 68” to 74” whilst on the move.

airflow, resulting in excellent grass lift and maximum airflow for improved mowing and grass collection in all conditions, particularly in wet grass.
At the second station we ‘test drove’ several new walk-behind lawnmowers, consisting of the JX90 range. Designed for the domestic and commercial markets, the JX90 JX90C and
JX90CB models have a newly designed 54cm (21”) cast aluminium mower deck featuring JDs exclusive TurboStar mowing system. This combines a deeply contoured deck and built-in fan with the hard wearing TurboJet blade to create increased
performance, and the three-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine is the most powerful and quickest accelerating in its class, with a top speed of 30mph. The XUV Gator also offers the only true four-wheel drive traction system on the utility vehicle market.
Finally, we visited the latest advances in the John Deere compact tractor range.
The large chassis 4020 Series compact tractors are now available with new Stage 3a engines, which have been designed to meet the latest emissions regulations whilst still maintaining excellent fuel economy.
In addition, power ratings have increased from 47hp to 49hp on the 4320, 52hp to 61hp on the 4520 and 62hp to 66hp on the 4720, at 2400rpm rated speed. Both the 4520 and 4720 models are also equipped with an intercooler to provide extra torque for more demanding PTO applications such as mowing and woodchipping.
On the third station we got to drive some of the existing utility vehicles before test-driving the new XUV 850D 4x4. This has been designed for greater off-road and rough-terrain
The tractors new eThrottle makes driving the tractor as easy as driving a car - just push the pedal and both forward speed and engine rpm increase. This feature reduces noise and fuel consumption and is particularly convenient for general transport and trailer work.
