I don’t believe it! The not so serious side of the industry

THE traditional swapping of shirts afterwards was not an option after the six-a-side teams of Austria’s and Germany’s topless women’s football teams met during Euro 2008. With the national colours painted on to their bare skin they wore nothing but thongs to hide the really naughty bits! The football may not have been of the highest quality but that did not temper the enthusiasm of a mostly male crowd boosted by a sizeable media presence only too happy to desert Euro 2008 training for an hour or two.

delighted with a 10-5 victory that they hoped would have been a morale booster for their male counterparts. Sadly, for them, that was not the case. “We played pretty hard” said

What is it with the

media and golf? In earlier pages of this issue we looked at the media’s penchant for taking a pop at golf at every opportunity. Now, our colleagues at BIGGA have come in for a bit of flack as well. The Independent, in their ‘Open Diary’ took a swipe at the association’s publication, Greenkeeper International with the following: “The greenkeeper’s cure for insomnia: The Diary has a good friend who used to work for International Cement Review, aka ‘the leading cement industry publication.’ But, like the product it espoused, it got harder as time went on. Harder to muster enthusiasm, that is. Far be it for us to start belittling specialist golf literature, but we think that ICR now has a serious rival in the fight against insomnia. sportingly and joined their opponents for alcopops and dancing at a beach club alongside the Danube. “I was supposed to hold the balls but I really have no idea how to do that” said German keeper Jana Bach. “Maybe it is because I am not all that much into soccer. I am more into shoes to be honest.” The verdict of the onlookers? “They might have to work on their technique a bit but it was definitely a rather pleasant game to watch and a very nice version of the beautiful game” said Rolf Hansen from Berlin.

Face the facts

A cemetery groundsman in the US has told how he found the image of a human face in a log he had just sawn in half.

Ernest Ward took the log into the office of his local newspaper, the Daily Times in Maryville, Tennessee.

He told reporters he found it as he and co- workers cleaned up debris from a weekend storm at the local Magnolia Cemetery.

Mr Ward said: “Who he is? I don’t know. One of my colleagues thinks he’s the face of a spirit.” The Currant Bun, bless them, ran with “Face of the Queen found in a tree!”

More likely it’s the grain of the wood! 136

Mind you, the same diary also had a go at fans stating “What is it with golf fans? Everywhere you look there’s another hundred identikit mannequins in branded shoes, tank tops and caps.” And this after two days of sideways wind and rain which required both players and spectators to wrap up against the elements. Everywhere I looked, were

umbrellas being blown inside out, and couples huddled together trying to keep warm! Not a tank top in sight nor, indeed, a cap, unless you count the one blowing down the second fairway!

Bunkered at St Pierre!

A secret bunker, used by army officers during World War II, has been unearthed at the Marriot St Pierre Hotel and Country Club near Chepstow. It is thought it was used by an undercover army unit based in the area during the war. It was found near the 5th green on the Old Course.

came to light after an appeal by the local newspaper in the area, The Free Press, on more information about a secretive army unit in the area called Abraham Patrol. Readers contacted the paper with information about a possible bunker at the course. Workers at St Pierre then

located the bunker which would have been used to launch guerrilla attacks on enemy forces had an invasion occurred. Course Manager, Stewart

Wood, added: “We discovered a hole in the ground a few months ago as we started to refurbish the course and did not know where it came from. It’s fascinating to find out that it is a war bunker. I had a look inside, but all you can see are old golf balls!”
