David’s in the Bar bar!
WHEN Shrewsbury Rugby Club wanted an after dinner speaker for their Sportsmans Dinner they were delighted when David Duckham MBE, former England, British Lions and Barbarians winger, accepted their invitation.
The assembled guests, dignitaries
and press were looking forward to hearing David’s stories of his life and times in rugby but, as the time grew nearer, there was still no sign of him. By now the organisers were panicking - in the bar of course - as you would expect of rugby folk. Amongst their number was Pitchcare’s Laurence Gale. Clasping his customary half pint of shandy (‘more lemonade than beer please’) he cast his eyes around the bar and spotted a smartly dressed chap sitting in the corner supping a pint. “Excuse me” said our Loz, “but aren’t you David Duckham?” to which the reply came “I was when I last looked! I’ve been sat here for half-an-hour and no one has said a word to me, so I thought I’d have a pint.” Apparently DD had snuck in without anyone recognising him! Loz reckons he was one of the best after dinner speakers he has had the pleasure of listening to. Feint praise indeed!
Wear your badge with pride!
YOU find some interesting things for sale on EBay. Like this badge for example; available to you for £1 + 50p post and packing. Who’s the handsome chap with the pre-mullett hairstyle? It’s Pitchcare’s very own John Richards in his playing days at Wolverhampton Wanderers. JR fridge magnets are also available - now they should scare the children!
From Pembroke to Pitchcare ...
IT’S been a quiet couple of month’s for Laurencisms, mainly because our Loz has had more holidays recently than Judith Chalmers. Still, in the short time he was available to do a bit of work, he came up with these gems!
