“The wickets Ecosolve drilled are the best on the whole square”

Billericay, with cores showing turf roots growing to a depth of 8 inches. Head groundsman Stuart Kerrison has nothing but good comments about the technique. “We’ve been using it for five years with great results and no problems,” he says. “We had very tired wickets and this treatment has resulted in excellent root development, letting air and water in, and it has greatly helped pace and bounce.” Using a 12 mm bit, Stuart has systematically drilled to a depth of 10 inches, 8 inches, 10 inches and 6 inches during the past four years. “We do it in November when the new grass is up and growing and with a 12 mm bit because we start using the ground in February. “ “We always knew we had the equipment that could address problems in cricket wickets, but it is our close liaison with the ECB’s Chris Wood and his regional pitch advisers that has been important. Their collective depth of knowledge and experience enabled us to develop and adapt our equipment for use on wickets ranging from Trent Bridge to Wickersley” said Bretton King, Technical Director for Ecosolve. He added “Our development of Deep Drill aeration has presented an affordable solution to all clubs who experience root break or shallow rooting problems and hence they do not have to rebuild strips at considerable expense.”
The Ecosol Deep Drill 60/18 aerator can:
•Drill, extract and aerate in one action without surface damage
•Encourage deeper rooting for stronger soil structure
•Break through clay bands, thatch, marl layers and weak soil areas
•Accelerate water movement away from the surface down vertical drainage channels to better soil beneath
•Increase turfgrass health by improving nutrient infiltration, percolation and gas exchange up to 10in deep
•Extract rootzone rather than compacting it
•Aerate in conditions where other machines cannot

52 Days OFF!
SIMON TAYLOR, Amenity Sales Development Director, British Seed Houses: For most people it’s always a challenge striking a balance between work, family and leisure, but I am always up for a challenge. It’s what makes me tick. The photo shows me at the finish of the Maratona del Dolomites; 90 miles long and 13,000ft of ascent (7 major mountain passes). There were around 9,000 entrants from all over the world, but only 99 from the UK. I completed the ride in 7hrs 21 min. The scenery took in some of the most spectacular parts of the Italian Dolomites, not that I saw a lot on the 50mph descents! My days off tend to include the bike wherever possible. I have been cycling since I was 13. It’s not really a hobby, but more of an obsession. My wife Kate says there are three of us in our relationship - me, her and the bike. Even a family day out or shopping trip will see the bike loaded on the back of the car so I can ride back to get a few miles in. Even my two sons, Jack (14) and Adam (12) think I am mad! However, Jack rode with me on a famous Tour de France climb called ‘Ventoux’ this summer; 14 miles and 7,000ft of accent. My ultimate challenge would be to cycle across America and retrace the Oregon trail, but that’s for another day!
