meetings Derek Crane Sports Turf was given the contract. Derek said, “We stripped off the topsoil and vegetation from the existing push up greens and stockpiled the spoil. New drains, consisting of perforated pipe and shingle back fill, have been installed underneath, and run into the surrounding ditches.” “Each green has been laid over a 6mm- 2mm gravel carpet 100mm thick. The topsoil was then regraded to contours before 270 tons of rootzone were spread, consolidated and graded to the new shape of each green. The depth of the 80:20 Keltic 1 rootzone when consolidated is 300mm.” “The new greens have some serious contours on them, and these new levels have been worked to Ken’s design and

graded ready for turfing. We allowed approximately a week on each green and, despite some wet days, we hit our target.” “We have also installed an average of

three new bunkers per green; these have been graded with quite fierce front walls, making them a real test for golfers. The bunkers have also been grouped closely together, providing only a narrow avenue for the golfers to play through with an approach shot. We have shaped and built the bunkers, but the greenkeepers will put an edge to them in the spring and fill them with sand.”

As part of the contract, Derek agreed to

reconstruct the joint 11th and 17th tees. Originally a two tee tiered complex it was widened by 5 metres and brought through at one level to become a double tee of approximately 600 metres square. The tee

was widened using local fill material brought in and tracked in stages to consolidate and minimise future settlement, drains installed at 6 metre centres and 180 tons of 50:50 incorporated into the existing topsoil. New irrigation has also been installed

around each of the new greens. A revamp of the existing system has been ongoing over the last 4 years with a complete rewire, several greens repulled and a borehole installed. To date Phase 2 has been project managed by the Head Greenkeeper and, in his absence, the capable hands of his Deputy, Dave Edmondson. The last four greens are due to be completed next autumn with the relevelling of tees being an ongoing project.
