This autumn, Bath Cricket Club’s Gordon Gill and his ‘part time’ contracting team will have renovated close to thirty cricket wickets, bowls greens and tennis courts!


WELL that’s almost it for another autumn. There’s just one more six wicket square to top dress, a final delivery of loam, and one more bowling green to renovate. Our last game was on 1st October, and now the weather has changed, so I am taking advantage of a wet Saturday to write this, and get Laurence (writing) Gale off my back! September my team and I will have attended to 23 cricket squares, 4 tennis courts and 2 bowling greens. Some we have just scarified and cleaned up, others we have carried out the full monty.


In the process, we will have handled in excess of 37 tons of loam, 60 bags of grass seed and 40 bags of fertiliser. That equates to approximately £6,500 worth of materials bought at the bulk rates that I pay. For those of you who do not


know, I manage my small contracting business around my commitments at Bath Cricket Club and, for that to be successful, I am indebted to my small team, and especially to David Salisbury and his father Frank, who carry out many of the renovations for me, and have done so for several years under my watchful eye. During all this activity, I have also overseen the relaying of five wickets at Bath’s first ground, undertaken by David, as well as constructing two new grass practice wickets in the outfield with my assistant Gregg.
