NTF Conference line-up announced

5th-8th December, Hilton Hotel, Blackpool

THE UK’s pre-eminent turfgrass conference is being held this year at the Hilton Hotel, Blackpool.

The four day Conference will provide high quality, advanced education from world renowned speakers. These include agronomists, consultants, researchers and top-class turf managers, who will share their know- how and experience to provide a unique blend of technical excellence and informal discussion on pressing and topical problems facing the turfgrass industry.

A taster of what is planned:-

SØREN UGILT LARSEN Turfgrass management for weed control on golf courses without pesticides.

In many countries, there are now limitations on the use of pesticides in the management of turfgrass. The presentation summarises some of the Danish experiences in managing weeds and insects on golf course fairways without pesticides.

the right elements at the right time. This is particularly pertinent to facilities that incorporate a natural turf playing surface because the provision of spectator ergonomics dominate design criteria, often to the detriment of the green bit in the middle of the stadium. The purpose of the presentation is to provide an overview of some of the key elements that influence the ultimate sustainability of natural turf facilities.

ALEX VICKERS Understanding soil properties.

Understanding how the physical properties of soil interact to provide a sustainable environment for turf growth whilst also providing an surface suitable for the desired sport is fundamental to good turf management. This session will deal with these fundamental issues and attempt to demonstrate how manipulation of basic soil priorities can have both beneficial and adverse affects on sports turf.

KEITH HAPP Dealing with Member Conflicts.

This presentations will deal with the communication strategies to better deal with member complaints and questions. The business of managing golf course turf has evolved into a test of communication skills. Growing grass is the easy part; discussing course maintenance needs and the expressing the importance of implementing timely procedures can be challenging to say the least.

STANLEY J. ZONTEK Creeping Bentgrass Varieties: Do They Have a Place in Europe?

Professor A. J. Turgeon

PROFESSOR A. J. TURGEON Foliar Fertilisation - the Do’s and Don’ts.

Foliar “feeding” has become popular as a measure for ensuring that turfgrass plants receive the nutrients required for healthy growth, regardless of soil conditions. This presentation will include nutrient application, absorption, and utilization of intensively cultured turfgrasses.

DR RICHARD EARL Creating the right environment.

Constructing sporting surfaces for long term performance means planning in

The new generation creeping bentgrasses are setting a new standard for putting green quality and performance where they are adapted in the United States. The old standard, Penncross, has largely been relegated to a fairway or tee variety. The question is, are these creeping bentgrasses adaptable to European conditions?

ADRIANO ALTISSIMO Environmental Interactions on species compositions.

A turf is, in many cases, a plant population of more species (mixture: a number of cultivars of different species), more cultivars of one species(blend). The presentation describes, via experimental trials and observations, the influence of some factors (species, cultivars and their initial ratio, water management,

nutrients managements) on the middle- long term composition of a turf, in order to build up a tool (model) able to predict the real composition, related with a specific climate, for matching the initial goal (the intention).

PROFESSOR JOSEPH VARGAS JR. New Options for Controlling Poa annua.

Successful control of annual bluegrass in creeping bentgrass greens will require an integrated program involving highly competitive bentgrass cultivars, adequate soil aeration and drainage, and an array of cultural interventions like aerification timing, fertility that consistently favour creeping bentgrass over annual bluegrass, including-but not limited to-the use of herbicides and plant growth regulators (PGRs). A new herbicide bispyrobac-sodium (Velocity) offers the opportunity to selectively controlling annual bluegrass in mixed stands with creeping bentgrass.

DR STEPHEN BAKER Comparison of third generation artificials with natural turf.

Comparison of the playing quality of natural turf pitches used for professional soccer with the performance of the third generation artificial surfaces, which are characterised by a long pile and a rubber crumb or rubber/sand infill. Parameters assessed include ball rebound, ball roll, traction and player/surface impact properties (hardness and force reduction).
