National Turfgrass Federation Research Award for Dr Alan Gange
DR Alan Gange, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Biology at Royal Holloway, University of London, will be the recipient of the prestigious National Turfgrass Foundation Research Award 2005. Dr. Gange is a well-known scientist and speaker to British audiences. He has wide research interests within the sports turf industry encompassing the quality of playing surfaces and non-playing areas. The latter is specifically targeted at golf courses, where he is interested in the role that courses play in habitat conservation at the landscape level. Alan sits on numerous advisory panels and his innovative work has attracted interest in many corners of the World.
A highly respected expert in the field of
turfgrass mycology and bacteriology, he is a regular speaker at conferences and educational events throughout Europe. Dr Gange is probably best known for his pioneering work on mycorrhizal associations in turfgrasses and has been responsible for establishing a greater understanding of the roles that these root inhabiting fungi play in the establishment, nutrition, and competitiveness of turfgrass species. The Award is presented by the National
Turfgrass Foundation in recognition of his enormous contribution to turfgrass research, not only with regard to its value to current turfgrass management, but also its potential impact on future environmentally sensitive maintenance practices. The National Turfgrass Foundation
Research Award 2005 will be presented to Dr. Alan Gange on Wednesday 7th December 2005 during the 2005 BRITTIR Awards Reception and Gala Evening which takes place during the week of the NTF Annual Conference, Hilton Hotel, Blackpool, England, 5th to 8th December 2005 inclusive (see next page).

How was it
Thanks for the copy of Pitchcare magazine. I thought it was very good, a credit to you. Well laid out and well written. I look forward to the next issue. Keep up the good work.

I’ve only just received the first edition but a quick flick through suggests I will be giving it the cover-to-cover treatment in the coming days.Well done Dave and the team. An excellent
publication of the highest quality that will advance the education and entertain all who read it. Another brave and positive move by Pitchcare.
Peter M Craig The Hurlingham Club
The Pitchcare magazine is full of excellent and informative articles and, I phope, we get much of the same in future editions. Keep up the good work Pitchcare.
Anthony Asquith Bill of wrongs!
IN our article on the Ashes we stated that Bill Gordon’s preparations at the Oval included covering the pitch to protect it from any adverse weather, reducing the pitch height to below 2mm and carrying out 15 hours of rolling time. In fact, the pitch remained uncovered,
the test pitch height is 3mm and only 10 hours of rolling were undertaken. Our sincere apologies to Bill.
Boughton expand Derby operation
BOUGHTON Turf Management, well known in the industry for producing and supplying quality turf-care products and carrying out turf-care contracting work, are expanding their Derby operation. From 1st June they were appointed distributors for the TYM range of tractors, Charterhouse, Blec and Rytec equipment for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and part of East Staffordshire. Boughton also intend to specialise in
tractor hire specifically for the turf-care market.
Many congratulations to all concerned with the putting together of the first issue of Pitchcare - the magazine. I found it a first class and informative read. It’s good to see a fresh, independent and topical publication enter the industry which does not simply regurgitate press releases.

Well done to all involved. The magazine is looking good and very informative. Maybe one article each issue on a pitchcare member picked at random would be good. Well done and good luck.
