38 WHAT POOL & HOT TUB

only seen in the domain of commercial pools but are now also produced specifically for domestic pools. There a number of excellent models on the market that will check your pool levels and self adjust to ensure the water is safely sanitised and that the pH is balanced while you enjoy your swim. Automatic chemical feeders are also a useful time saving item that can be quickly and simply installed in the plant room. For those pool users with sensitive skin, active oxygen (non halogen) systems can be used as a milder alternative to chlorine. Automatic pool covers have been around for many years and are now seen more as a necessity rather than a luxury. There are many to choose from but some of the best are the slatted type systems which are fully automatic and can be instantly opened and closed at the touch of a button or turn of a key. These covers come in a selection of colours and are solidly made to last. The beauty of a slatted cover system is that as well as being completely automatic they are also very versatile and can be tailor made even for the most unusually shaped pool. Some slatted covers can also be operated by using solar technology alone with no electrical supply, making for a truly ecologically friendly and simple installation. Whilst the slatted covers are probably the most aesthetically pleasing, and can be installed in such a way that they become a fully secure safety cover, there are purpose made automatic safety covers that are the most suitable option for those who require extensive closed pool security. Single membrane, automatic safety covers are designed specifically to ensure the pool area is completely safe when not in use and these covers can even be walked on without any adverse effect. The covers can be fitted with the tracks above or below the pool surround and as with the slatted covers can be opened and closed quickly and efficiently at the touch of a button. An automatic pool cover provides the perfect foil to unwanted guests such as wind blown debris and remains poised for removal as soon as swimming is on the agenda. Automatic pool cleaners are thought of by many pool owners as the 100% must haves. With so many choices it is impossible to list them all but by way of explanation these clever cleaning machines can be fully programmable electronic robots or operate simply by using the pool’s filtration system so are powered by suction or pressure water flow. Some pressure side cleaners do however require an additional “booster” pump. There are also fully automatic pool cleaners designed specifically for above-ground pools, and these will operate at lower suction rates.

Illumination fuses with imagination to provide a wash of colour combinations from ocean blue to hot pink that suffuse evenings round the pool with radiance that ranges from subtle to exciting. Walkways and dimly lit or unattractive outside areas can also be lit using lighting that enhances, and at the same time, provides safety and security.

today’s switched on pool owners want more than just good looks they want a pool that is dazzlingly brilliant and one that they can spend time swimming in or relaxing by without having to lift a finger

Fibre optic lighting is not only cool to look at but also to the touch as it emits no heat or electricity. This form of lighting can be used in areas that are difficult to service and because the illuminator (light source) is remote and can transport multiple lighting options the system is ideal for design purposes. Hi-Performance LED (light emitting diode) lighting can deliver an amazing 100,000 hours of brilliance! Installing LED lights or upgrading existing lights to LED not only saves money but also helps to reduce carbon footprint as each light will reduce energy consumption by at least 80% compared to traditional lights. By incorporating and automating the two systems in the leisure area the effect is nothing short of spectacular. With such a plethora of fantastic automatic pool additions to choose from, all that is really needed now is for someone to invent the perfect autonomous poolside butler so that even topping up the chilled drinks and offering round the nibbles can be carried out automatically!
