the market which use low chlorine and a smaller number which offer chlorine-free alternatives. An additional advantage of looking for lower chlorine usage in a pool is a potential reduction in skin and eye irritation for some swimmers. Apart from the chlorine-free water systems on the market there are also options for Ozone systems or ultraviolet (UV) systems. The ozone system introduces ozone into the water which destroys algae, viruses and bacteria. It also causes minute particles to be suspended on the surface of the water and can then be easily removed. UV systems are increasingly popular with larger pools and although the initial investment can be larger the system is cost effective in the long run and those pool owners who have made the investment claim that UV produces ultra safe clean and bacteria free water to swim in. UV systems use the existing pool filtration system to feed water through the water exposing it to UV-C radiation. The radiation neutralises harmful bacteria and prevents them from multiplying.


3.Using the power of the sun. Using the earth’s natural resource is the most obvious solution to reducing carbon footprint. The renewable energy most favoured by larger swimming pool owners is solar thermal heating because it is easy to install, does not need planning permission and has


proved itself to be highly efficient over the years. You don’t need a hot sunny day to produce solar energy – that is a myth. Even a cool winter’s day will provide energy – as long as the sky is clear. You will need a good sunny spot for the solar panels to be placed. There are two types of solar panels of collectors. The first are flat pack collectors which look a bit like domestic radiators and are made from black coated metal or plastic. The disadvantage of these is that they radiate the heat as well as collect it, the hotter the sun the worse the problem. The second type uses evacuated tube collectors where the energy absorber is reduced to a strip of copper. This absorber strip is bonded to a copper pipe through which the fluid is passed. With our climate warming up its reasonable to think that there will be some solar benefit from at least eight months a year and although the payback may be relatively slow the energy saving is immediately apparent. There’s also a big advantage in that your pool system can be linked with any domestic appliance and provide hot water for the home. Grants are available for solar power systems. So there are options which can help your bank balance, your green credentials and your personal energy savings – and allow you the added benefit of knowing you are doing your bit when you enjoy swimming in your pool.
