WATER WELLNESS

COME ON IN THE

WATER’S LOVELY We are all looking for ways to stay fit and well. But it’s more than just getting fit, it’s about toning up tired and often tight muscles, perhaps losing some weight and even more importantly making the first steps to recovery from illness.

Finding the right safe and enjoyable method to do all this isn’t easy and it doesn’t take a lot to make things worse with an injury, a torn muscle or strain caused by training on hard surfaces. There’s a range of new exercise and fitness machines which allow you to walk, run and exercise in water. It’s the opportunity to turn a pool into a gym. Using exercise equipment in water means there’s no hard impact on legs and muscles, the benefits of buoyancy in the water supports your weight, which in turn reduces the force of stress placed on the joints on land based exercise. The Archimede Pool Treadmill allows you to enjoy all the benefit of jogging without feeling tired. The machine is very stable in the water and is perfect for start up exercises for pre- and post natal exercises for example or for rehabilitation after illness. The beauty of both of them is they can be used by everyone from the more elderly looking for gentle exercise to the sportsman looking for higher levels of performance, stamina and fitness. Aquatic therapy is especially useful for patients with arthritis, healing fractured bones, or those who are overweight. For more information visit

Free swimming schemes for over 60s still available*

Local authorities through Britain are still offering free admission for over 60s to public swimming pools. Promoted ahead of the London Olympics to raise awareness of the need for physical activity for older citizens, the scheme offers the chance for the elderly to visit and use local pools completely free of charge. Help the Aged has welcomed the Government initiative.

“It is well known that keeping active, busy and above all engaged with life, helps tremendously in staving off the years and preventing illness and disease. Swimming is a great form of exercise. It can be quite gentle and undemanding yet offer tremendous health benefits.“ Actor and cross channel swimmer

David Walliams has been one of the supporters of the free swimming initiative: “I hope that by making swimming free for so many in this country we will encourage people to find the time to swim,” he said.

NOTHING IS BETTER FOR YOU THAN SWIMMING

n Swimming is famously the best exercise you can have. When we are in water the body has a freedom of movement which allows loads of muscle groups to be strengthened. Swimming tones the body and provides an excellent cardiovascular workout as well. Moreover, it also strengthens your heart muscles and improves the delivery of oxygen to the different parts of the body.

Some of them include improved strength and flexibility, enhanced muscular stamina and balance, a stronger heart, and better physique or figure. Apart from this, swimming also works as a fast and effective remedy for healing muscles.

n Swimming also helps in weight control and can relieve your mind from stress and tension, fueling your energy level to a large extent. This is will keep you in perfect shape, physically as well as mentally. Swimming can be very beneficial to your heart, lungs, and muscles. Regular swimming builds up muscle strength and stamina, and also improves posture and flexibility.

David Walliams took up swimming as a youth as his preferred form of exercise, because he was overweight. He swam the English Channel for the charity Sport Relief. He completed the swim in 10 hours and 34 minutes to cover the 35 km (22 miles) stretch of sea, the equivalent of 700 lengths of an Olympic standard swimming pool. He raised over £1m in donations. Under the supervision of his trainer, he trained for nine months to prepare for the swim.

* Not all councils have approved free swimming. Please check with your local council to confirm free swimming is available.

n Swimming can particularly be quite helpful for individuals who are obese, or individuals suffering from leg or lower back problems. This activity offers some aerobic benefits and unlike other weight training programmes, swimming does not put strain on connective tissues.

n Swimming burns three calories a mile per pound of

bodyweight. For instance if you weigh 150 lbs and it takes you roughly about 30 minutes to swim one mile, then you can expect to lose 900 calories in one hour. Swimming for fitness is quickly gaining a lot of popularity, as it can be a perfect activity for nearly anyone. This includes the most competitive athletes to the physically challenged individuals.
