Too many police chiefs? - A review of police strength and costs in England & Wales 2010
TOTAL HMIC OFFICER & POLICE STAFF SALARIES—INCLUDING OVERTIME
The table on the previous page contains data taken straight from the HMIC website individual force profiles. On the financial pages of each profile, there are details of officer, staff and PCSO numbers and their related costings. In addition, there are details of non staffing costs enabling us to examine the force and service expenditure in greater detail.
This extract from the profile of the Metropolitan Police shows the population the force is responsible for, the cost of police officers in millions, the cost of police staff, PCSO’s and non staff costs as a total. Later in the report, we look at the non staff costs in greater detail, which are also itemised within each force profile.
By extrapolating the data within each of the force tables, we were able to arrive at the report on the preceding page. We were then able to produce the Officer to staff and officer to PCSO cost ratios. The reader may recall that in numerical terms, the police officer to staff ration was almost 2:1 and the officer to PCSO ratio almost 9:1.
In financial terms, the cost of police officers is almost three time that of police staff and almost 16 times that of PCSO’s. From similar profiles we were also able to capture the overtime expenditure for police officers and police staff for all forces.
