SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS

THE TENNIS ACADEMY SCOTLAND

Recently eight boys and girls from the Tennis Academy participated in the Finals Day of the Scottish Schools Team Tennis Championships. The Merchiston boys were looking to build on their first ever title win in 2008 and the girls were attempting to go one step further than last year’s performance and secure St George’s first title since the 1980s. After tough competition it was another convincing win for Merchiston, the Scottish Cup Champions for the second year running, and the first ever Scottish Cup title for St George’s.

CELEBRATION OF SPORT

The annual Games took place at the end of the Summer Term, with guest of honour, Jason Gardener, MBE, and 4 x 100m Gold Medalist in the Athens 2004 Olympics. Jason presented winners with their medals and also attended the Celebration of Sport Dinner that evening. At the Dinner, The Crerar Quaich for International Achievement was awarded to James; The Mann Shield - Team of the Year was awarded to the Athletics Team; and The Duncan Watson Memorial Vase for Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Patrick. Throughout last year the School participated in over 650 sports fixtures in 16 different sports, and just over 91% of the boys have represented the School in some form of sport.

NEW ELITE GOLF PROGRAMME

The School is developing its golf provision for pupils with the introduction of a new Elite Golf Programme (commencing academic year 2010-11).

In association with Kings Acre Golf Course, the programme will offer aspiring young golfers an excellent education with outstanding opportunities within the golf world, including expert tuition and focus on fitness and sports science. With a minimum of three sessions per week, the expectations placed on members of the Elite Golf Programme by the School and the Golf Professionals will be very high.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations go to boys pursuing sporting achievements outwith School, including: • Matthew who won the Scottish Championship in the Grand Prix 125 Hondas for the second year running. • James who sails with the East Scotland Topper Squad through the winter, and races at Scottish and UK events. • Angus who plays Youth Shinty with the North and South of Scotland U14 Team.

“The Elite Golf Programme will give young golfers the opportunity to combine excellent coaching with an outstanding education. The partnership with Kings Acre will provide access to a first class course and facilities.”
