DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY
EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERING
Pupils at Merchiston were recently awarded prizes for innovative work in Design and Technology at the CREST (CREativity in Science and Technology) Awards 2009. Silver Award winners included James, Michael, Lewis and Alex, for their various product designs, including a disability tray for the elderly, and a team of boys designed an eco hotel and resort. Gold winners included Grant for his milk drum transporter, Mark for his diesel yard buggy and James for his portable skis.
Design and Technology success continued this year with Mark, James Y, Grant and James R making it into the top 12 in Britain for the TDI awards (rewarding the quality of design making and innovative thinking that
BRITISH MEMORY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations go to Craig in the Upper Sixth Form and Charles in the Lower Sixth Form who both did very well in the National (UK) 2009 Final of the Schools Memory Challenge. Charles came 16th out of 108 and Craig came in 8th position overall. Craig also picked up a Gold Medal for his performance in the binary numbers discipline, memorizing 105 in 5 minutes!
History Teacher, Mr Dixon commented: “This is the first time we have taken part in the competition and the boys have really benefited from the memory training, which should aid them in preparing for their exams.”

This year’s CREST Technology awards will see winners Scott, Craig and Campbell attend the British finals 2010. Ruaridh will also join the boys after his win in the Scottish section of Young Engineer for Britain for his T-shirt compactor. Another winner, former pupil Grant, unfortunately cannot make it along due to work commitments.
The Go4SET team will be presenting results from the waste audit they carried out on the School at the CAD (Celebration Awards Day) at Heriot Watt University in March 2010.
