SUCCESS AFTER SCHOOL
DIRECTOR OF STUDIES RECEIVES RECOGNITION FROM STANFORD
The Director of Studies, Marion Muetzelfeldt, recently received a certificate from Stanford University recognizing her commitment to the education of her pupils. Former pupil and student of Stanford University, Stewart Dennis, nominated Marion for the ‘Teacher Tribute Initiative’ for her exceptional teaching. Mr Richard H Shaw, Dean of Admission and Financial Aid at Stanford, commented: “Mrs Muetzelfeldt has had a meaningful impact on the lives and education of your students.”
LIFE AT
STANFORD UNIVERSITY,
BY FORMER PUPIL STEWART DENNIS
Life at Stanford is exciting, intense, and engaging. In terms of academics, I can take whatever classes I want, so this quarter I am taking classes in ‘organizing global projects’, computer science, social dances of North America and I’m continuing a year long great books class. The opportunities outside the classroom are incredible. Last weekend I flew to Princeton and New York for a debate tournament and I’ve become a freshman intern with the Business Association of Stanford Entrepreneurial Students.
Even more importantly, I’ve also been having a blast with the people here, who have an ever-refreshing Californian light heartedness, positivity, and optimism. Among other things I’ve been learning to play the tuba in the Stanford Band. Next week I am doing my first stand-up comedy performance on campus and I completed a fair portion of the charity dance marathon, where we danced for 24 hours straight.
VARSITY MATCHES
Merchiston was represented at a recent varsity match by former pupils: Oliver at Oxford, Seb and Tommy at Cambridge.
SIXTH FORM SOCIAL WITH KILGRASTON
The boys regularly join girls’ schools for social events
including ten pin bowling, cinema trips, discos and
ceilidhs. Sixth Form pupils recently attended a social
event at Kilgraston School in Perthshire.

Merchiston prepared me to hit the ground sprinting here. The leadership experience I got at Merchiston was especially valuable, which I think was the key factor in helping my successful run in the election and re-election of the Freshman class President here at Stanford. I haven’t even mentioned the weather here. I hope if I write this again after another six months, my list will be twice as long, and about four and a quarter times as exciting.
