RUGBY, CRICKET & ATHLETICS

The 1st XV have played particularly well this year, recently reaching the semi-finals of the Scottish Schools Cup. The team have played in a variety of 1st XV matches, and will also participate in a number of tournaments, including the National Schools Sevens at Rosslyn Park in March 2010. Players have also achieved individual successes as Sam and Angus have been selected for the Edinburgh Under 17 Squad, and Sam has also been selected for the Scotland U17s. In addition Joe has been selected for Edinburgh U16s. The Merchiston Sevens was a huge success this year, with over 400 boys competing in 4 different age groups. The U15s won their event as did the U16s in the tournament’s inaugural year.

The School continues to excel in cricket.

Last year the 1st XI

won the Lothian Schools Cup, and competed in many matches across the UK. Oliver, who has recently been selected to play for Scotland, also completed a first Scottish Premiership century in an 81-run victory over Heriot’s at Goldenacre.

ATHLETICS

The School won two relays at the Scottish Schools Relay Championships 2009 last June. This is the first time since 1993 that Merchiston has won two relays at the Championships. Individual successes included Will winning a Gold, and Myles winning a Bronze in the Over 17 Boys Javelin, Lachlan won a Bronze in the Over 17 Long Jump, Monty came 8th in the final of the Under 17 100m, 4th in the Under 17 100m Hurdles and Jay came 4th in the final of the Under 17 400m. Furthermore, Fraser won the Scottish Schools Cross- Country Championship in Irvine, and George has been chosen to represent Scotland at U15 level.
