have taken around 15 years to come to fruition – from the initial consultation and planning on designs to the last phase of the scheme being completed. It will be the first acute hospital in Britain’s second city for 70 years.

The iconic QEHB has 1,213 beds, the

largest critical care unit in Europe and 30 operating theatres, including seven dedicated day case theatres. Thanks to all this, and more, University Hospital Birmingham is in a position to achieve some of the shortest waiting times in Britain. Around 44 % of in-patient beds are in single rooms, with the rest in four-bed wards. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms. teams will be able to carry out tests to ensure all the equipment is installed correctly and working properly before the first patients come through the doors. It’s a gradual process but all part of the intensive and detailed planning that has gone into every stage of this major project. The fact that our partners have delivered on time means that the Trust is on schedule with its move plans.”
