Earth Day 2010

It seems as though everything and everyone has their “day”. We celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparents Day, President’s Day and much - much more here in these United States. The amazing thing is that we hear about these days at the floral shops and card shops weeks in advance of the actual date. I sup- pose that Earth Day doesn’t have the same commercial value for most merchants. Maybe the plant nurseries or seed stores might capitalize, but it doesn’t seem as though they do.

My nickel rant about Earth Day is the fact that I think every day should be Earth Day. Whether or not it’s prof- itable for companies to recycle bottles and plastic is not really the point now is it? How about the idea that each and every one of us might just pick up a piece of plastic or a piece of trash to keep it from being a blight on the earth?

Many of you may have read my article last month about the problem with raising meat and slaughtering it for food – the tons upon tons of manure and refuse that is generated by this industry is staggering! Even if you don’t like the idea of completely giving up meat, might you just find it possible to go meatless for one day. I knew a Christian family who did this & donated the money that they saved to their church. If everyone in the world would skip meat one day a week it could save billions of tons of garbage.

The other thing that was called to my attention this week was a press release stating that Walmart is going green. “Last week CEO Mike Duke stood on a podium with EDF’s Fred Krupp and announced a goal of elimi- nating 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gases from Walmart’s global supply chain by the end of 2015. That’s the equivalent of taking more than 3.8 million cars off the road for a year. Or, if you look at it another way — saving 2 billion gallons of gasoline a year.” Visit http://walmartstores.com/sites/webcast/sustainability- announcement/2010/february/ for more information. Now if Walmart is doing it, there must be something in the profit margin that is encouraging them to do it. Perhaps if this giant (not known for their warm fuzzies about earth friendly policies) can do it – can’t we all give it a go?
