Sociology: AS and A2 Level
Sociology is the study of society: the attempt to
understand human behaviour through the influences
which act upon each one of us, such as the mass media,
education system and family background. Some
questions sociologists ask are: How does society shape
our lives? Does the mass media influence people? Why
do people commit crime?
Course details Students take two units at AS and this is
followed by a further two units at A2.
How is it assessed? All units are assessed by written
SOCIOLOGY
examination.
Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2
www.leyton.ac.uk level.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
five GCSE grades A*-C, including English Language.
Where can this lead me? Sociology is a useful subject
as it covers the whole of social life. Most students go on
to university, and develop skills in analytical and critical
thinking useful in many careers including: law, personnel,
social work, police, probation, social research, journalism,
teaching, management and local government.
What are the enrichment opportunities? Trips have
included visits to Parliament, a tour of the historical
highlights of the East End of London, and conferences
which feature high-profile sociologists. Students will also
have the opportunity to contribute towards a newsletter
looking at current events from a sociological point of
view.
