Applied Science:
BTEC First Diploma
BTEC First courses are vocational alternatives to traditional
GCSEs. The Applied Science course covers the basic
principles of biology, chemistry and physics, their
applications in medicine (diagnosis and treatment) and
how science contributes to society.
Course details The course is made up of six units divided
approximately equally into Biology, Chemistry and
Physics. Most students combine the course with improving
their grade in either GCSE English Language or
Mathematics. There is also the opportunity to develop
key skills in IT.
How is it assessed? Each of the six units is assessed
internally through tests, practical investigations or
research assignments. There is no external assessment.
Course duration One year full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
mainly D grades at GCSE including Double Science,
Mathematics and English Language. However, some
flexibility is possible.
Where can this lead me? You can progress to the AS
Applied Science course, separate AS sciences or
employment.
What are the enrichment opportunities? There is an
educational trip at the end of the course.
