Health and Social Care:
Applied A Level
This course provides excellent preparation for careers in
health and social care. Through work experience you will
gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of care
values and the provision of care.
Course details This is a level 3 course, equivalent to two
A levels. There are twelve units of study over the two years.
The course also includes essential work placements with
different client groups in a variety of care settings, one
day a week.
HEALTH AND
How is it assessed? During the course you will study twelve
units. Eight of the units are coursework-based and will be
moderated by Edexcel. The other four units are assessed by
SOCIAL CARE
external national tests. These are 1.5 hour papers in January
and June.
Course duration Two years full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? Five GCSE grades
A*-C, preferably including English Literature and English
Language, or a Merit/Distinction in an appropriate BTEC 1st
course. You should be able to demonstrate an interest and
enthusiasm for working with people who need care, and a
non-judgmental acceptance of others, including valuing
diversity. Some voluntary experience of the care sectors is
preferable. All students are required to complete a Criminal
Records Bureau check at the beginning of the course.
Where can this lead me? The course is a recognised route
to employment in health and social care settings, both
direct and indirect, or higher education: nursing, midwifery,
social work, radiography, teaching, occupational therapy,
social policy, sociology and psychology are some of the
degree courses on to which our students have progressed.
What are the enrichment opportunities? We offer work
experience in statutory, voluntary and private sector
organisations, residential study experience, visits to care
settings and exhibitions, first aid certificate training, a team
adventure day and a range of speakers.
