Performing Arts: BTEC First Diploma
BTEC First in Performing Arts is a practical, skill-based
performance course. It is an ideal introduction to the
two-year BTEC National in Performing Arts, and students
who are successful on this course may have the
opportunity to progress. The course is equivalent to
four GCSE grades A*-C.
Course details You will study Performing Arts full-time,
with an emphasis placed on developing your acting skills
and an understanding of the Performing Arts industry.
There will be an opportunity to perform in a play in the
summer term.
How is it assessed? Most of the work is project-based,
and all is internally assessed by the Performing Arts team.
Course duration One year full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
GCSE Drama, and be able to demonstrate an interest
in theatre and performance. Entry is by audition.
Where can this lead me? The course can be followed
by the BTEC National in Performing Arts or an A level
programme.
What are the enrichment opportunities? There are theatre
visits and other performances throughout the year. The
Performing Arts department has regular visits from
professional actors, singers and performers.
Music: AS and A2 Level
This course is both practical and academic and is
suitable for students who have achieved a grade 4
(or above) standard in any instrument or voice.
Course details The course develops skills and knowledge
in a systematic way, expanding understanding of music
history, analysis, harmony and aural training. Practical
options include composition and performance.
How is it assessed? The courses culminate in written
examinations and practical performance for assessment.
Course duration One year full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? All applicants need
to take an audition, and should have five GCSE grades
A*-C.
Where can this lead me? Students find that these courses
expand and consolidate their musical experience, either
for personal development or as a preparation for higher
education.
