Media Studies: AS and A2 Level
This subject offers you the opportunity to combine a
theoretical understanding of the mass media in society,
and methods for analysing media products, with the
development of practical skills for media production.
Course details The balance of theory and practical work
means that you will learn about how media industries
operate in today's society. You will analyse media
products and think about how audiences use these.
You will produce media products of your own.
How is it assessed? Assessment is by a combination of
examinations (50%) and practical production work (50%).
Course duration One year at AS level. One year at
A2 level.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
five GCSE grades A*-C, including English Language.
In addition, you should have an existing knowledge
of and/or interest in Media Studies.
Where can this lead me? This subject offers a suitable
background for a wide range of university courses

including media studies, cultural studies, journalism,
film studies, multimedia, communications,
marketing/advertising and related disciplines.

What are the enrichment opportunities? There are visits
to TV studios and free film screenings at cinemas. You will
also have the opportunity to participate in community
media projects. We have strong links with media
professionals and we regularly invite these professionals
to the College to work with students.
Media: BTEC First Diploma
The BTEC First Diploma is a practical work-related course.
The course is aimed at students who wish to pursue a
vocational media course that also prepares them for
Advanced level courses or employment. It is equivalent
to four GCSE grades A*-C.
Course details You will develop practical skills to enable
you to produce your own media products as well as
developing your writing skills. You will research and
analyse media, look at careers in media industries and
writing for the media, and produce videos, print products
and sound.
How is it assessed? Assessment is through a coursework
portfolio. Students will also take Key Skills for which they
will produce a portfolio and take an examination.
Course duration One year full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have
GCSE grades A*-D which should include at least a
D in English Language, or a Merit or Distinction in an
appropriate level 1 course. You will need to show a
piece of media work at interview.
