Meet Your Muse
Imagine walking along a path. Notice what it feels like: What do you see and hear around you? How does it feel beneath your
feet? What’s the path made of?
Become aware of a building in front of you where your muse waits for you. See the steps and door of the building and observe
what it looks like. Climb the stairs and open the door, noticing what that feels like—the handle, the weight of the door—and
enter the building. Go to the room where your muse is waiting and observe your muse. Your muse may be a person, animal or
being, or it may be more of a symbol, a color or even just a felt sense. Don’t judge it. Just notice and greet your muse.
Ask your muse what it wants you to know in relation to your writing project (book, article, journal entry, blog post—whatever it
is you’re writing). Listen for the answer. It may come as a felt sense, you may hear it as the voice in your head that you always
“hear,” or it may seem different. All of these are fine.
Ask your muse if it wants something from you. Again, wait for the answer to come to you. Is this something you can agree and
commit to? If so, let your muse know so (in your mind). If not, you can let your muse know that, too.
Your muse has a gift for you. Accept the gift. Feel free to ask questions about the gift. Ask your muse if there’s anything else
it wants you to know. When you feel complete, thank your muse. Know that you can come to this room any time to visit and
connect again. For now, say goodbye to your muse. Return out the door and down the path.
When you complete the exercise, write down notes about the experience. Then move on to step four and continue with your
writing project.
