THE PARTY SPOT
Villa Lounge – 8623 Melrose Avenue in WeHo
Looking for a Melrose place that doesn’t involve scandal, blackmail or a body floating in a pool and instead offers up
a good time? Well, you are in luck, because Villa Lounge at 8623 Melrose Avenue in WeHo is the antithesis of the famed
apartment complex where the aforementioned events transpire in TV Land on a weekly basis. However, don’t adjust your
dial if you do happen to see some of the series regulars knockin’ back a few cocktails here after a hard day of work. This is
one of the preeminent see-and-be-seen places in the town of Tinsel, with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Drew Barrymore
and others making the literal rounds. Technically, there is no velvet rope to pass through in order to gain entrance —but it’s
a smart move to make a reservation, so the doorman knows what’s what, just in case. However, once inside you will have to
contend with a number of regular ropes hanging from the ceiling in certain spots. The remaining décor is reminiscent of
your grandmother’s house with wallpaper to spare. That’s only if she was cool enough to think of having a zebra print stair
runner, and her house was an urban jungle-chic setting with various DJs, dancers and dance floors (oh my!). Even though
its tagline is “Established Way Back When,” there is nothing decidedly out of vogue with this hot spot.

Claire Oswalt at the Taylor De Corboda Gallery
Ever since 2006, the art gallery Taylor De Corboda has afforded Ange-
linos a venue to witness up-and-coming artists working in a variety of
different imaginative facets. Claire Oswalt is one such creative type who
captures the mind’s eye with her series of sculptural drawings entitled
Peril In Perfection. In her second solo show at the gallery, the New York-
based artiste offers her “push and pull between freedom and control,”
courtesy of works she has created from jointed figures made out of wood
and graphite on paper. The artistic endeavors, which are in the tradition
of puppets and marionettes, highlight her conception that the artist is a
“master of manipulation and calculation” and focuses on aggression in
male adults. Sounds hot!
Taylor De Cordoba is located at 2660 S La Cienega Boulevard and Os-
walt’s show runs through October 31.
