PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ POOLS
CONTINUE THE SWITCH TO UV
One of Britain’s most prestigious
independent schools, The Royal Russell in
Croydon, has completed a project carried
out over the period 2007 to 2008 where
the latest ultraviolet water disinfection
technology was fitted to both the school’s
two swimming pools and the six tonne
storage tank supplying the showers and
other points.
The work was carried out by specialist
pool contractors Aqua Process Engineering
Ltd of London and the ultraviolet systems
were supplied by UV water treatment
specialist Hanovia.
The Royal Russell swimming pool

reasons to those of the basic need for
disinfection itself which are ones also fairly
typical of swimming pool applications. The
School’s Engineering Services Manager felt
that the pool water treatment system was
no longer keeping up with greater bather
loads, usage and higher user expectations.
He chose to pursue the ‘UV’ route not only
because Pool Manager, Bob Ellis, wanted
the improved disinfection it offers, but also
because of its vital primary advantages.
These included no pool ‘chlorine smell’, no
red eyes and rashes, lower running costs
and easier operation. The biggest target
was to lower the TDS levels which the pool
management felt were insufficiently
controlled in the ‘chemical only’ pool
system.

High levels of chloramines or ‘combines’
are a particular menace because they
dictate that pool operators dose with very
high levels of chlorine to exceed the
chloramine/combine level and that is
costly, as is the consequent higher dosing
with balancing chemicals. That, in turn,
increases TDS problems. Combines also
cause the notorious pool smell, sore eyes
and rashes already discussed. As for excess
