More Than 50 Years of Mutual Support

OR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING back 100 years to 1916 and 50 years to 1966 to see what was going on in the Cattle Rais-
ers community. Those fi ndings show up on the next to last page of The Cattleman. This month we can see that Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association’s connection to the Hereford community has lasted more than 50 years. The August 1966 issue is packed with Hereford advertisements and
articles about Hereford fi eld days, tours, shows and information on the regional Hereford associations in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas. This month, it is once again our privilege to carry the marketing mes-
sages of several Hereford ranches to the readers of The Cattleman. Some of those ranches were represented in the 1966 issue, indicating sustain- able ranching operations and a tenacious loyalty on the part of Hereford ranchers to their breed of beef cattle. We had some special help with our feature articles this month, for
which I am grateful. I mentioned in July that our freelance writer Gary DiGiuseppe had passed away in June. Our friends at the Texas Forest Service, who Gary had interviewed for an article in the fi re series, heard of his passing and provided me with the review copy of the article that was scheduled for the August issue. I am glad to be able to share his work this last time. We had additional help from our friends at Livestock Weekly who have
graciously allowed us to print an article on Barber Ranch, Hereford pro- ducers in the Texas Panhandle. On a personal note, it’s pretty nifty to be able to include a former co-worker in an article. Terri Barber and I worked together early in our careers and it’s exciting to see where she is now with her career at Elanco and to see her service on the American Hereford As- sociation board of directors. I hope you’ll join us at the Sheraton at the Capitol, Sept. 28 to 30, for this important Cattle Raisers meeting.
