to produce those tigerstripes,” says Dale. “It was just easier to take the cattle to the buyers than it was to get the buyers to come up here. Plus, Ken (Jordan) gets buyers in there from every direction.” Their female sale is held in December, at the Supe-


rior Livestock studios in the historic stockyards in Fort Worth. Terri explains that the females are displayed in the pens out back of the studio. Though their bulls are pretty well confi ned to a 5-state area throughout the Southeast and Southwest, their heifers go all over the U.S. Mary’s dad sold a lot of cattle into Mexico. Today their international customers are largely from Central and South America. Although 2 of the 4 Barber children have outside


jobs, all four are most defi nitely involved in keeping the operation going. Justin and his wife and their twin daughters live at the ranch full-time. Brett has come back to the ranch full-time after teaching agriculture in Dumas. Terri, a territory manager for Elanco, lives near Albuquerque. Jason, who works for Superior Livestock Auction, lives in Fort Worth with his wife and young son. “There are a lot of people whose kids don’t want to come back to the operation,” Dale says. “All 4 of ours


want to be involved in the family business.” From their parents, the Barber kids learned responsi-


bility and self-respect and as Dale puts it, “hard work.” “They taught us to think on our own 2 feet,” Terri


says. “They trained us well. We took on lots of re- sponsibility at a very young age. We all help keep the wheels on.” And they believe in giving back to their community. Terri is in line to serve as president of the 135-year-old American Hereford Association. The fourth generation to raise reputation Hereford cattle, Terri and her brothers are proud of their legacy. “As a family, we all realize our strengths and our weaknesses and we respect the fact that each brings something to the table,” Terri says. Hereford cattle, Dale says, have made them a liv-


ing, though he admits it’s not always been an easy kind of living. “It’s something you defi nitely have to love to do it.” They particularly appreciate the fact that they have


been able to do what they do together. “The neatest thing about this business is that I’ve been able to work with Dale all my life,” says Mary. “We just appreci- ate every sunrise and we still love to load up and go dancing.”
