Feeling the squeeze With so many holidaymakers choosing the western Med this year, there is an inevitable impact on both flight and accommodation capacity and pricing. Prestige’s David Skillicorn says that flight
capacity is not a problem as airlines have rerouted aircraft away from destinations such as Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey to the Spanish mainland and Canaries. “However, hotel accommodation is already a
problem,” he adds. “We are a small operator and are getting on average several stop sales from hotels across the Med each day. I believe that some of the travel trade has not yet woken up to how acute the shortage of beds in certain destinations is. The old adage ‘book early to avoid disappointment’ has never been more true than this year.” Finding rooms has become “ever more challenging” in some destinations such as Majorca, Croatia and Sicily this summer, adds Skillicorn.
