New Caledonia A secret jewel of the South Pacific, New Caledonia is a

geological phenomenon that boasts exceptional biodiversity and a variety of landscapes. Just the kind of “off-the-beaten-track” destination

today’s experiential traveller is looking for, this is home to the Caledonian lagoon, the world’s largest lagoon and a Unesco World Heritage site. It is a major centre for snorkelling and diving, or when viewed from above on a microlight trip from Voh, the mangrove makes the beautiful shape of a heart (as seen in the main image here). Other unmissable stops include the capital, Noumea and

its surrounding islands; hiking and cycling in the Grandes Fougeres Park in Farino on the west coast; or kayaking trips to Hienghene to see its crystal-clear waterfalls and views of mountains plunging into the sea. When thinking of where to stay, one option is Le Paradis

d’Ouvea, an idyllic hideaway created by fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto on Mouli beach, within a stunning atoll.

Get to know the rich culture of New Caledonia

The Islands of Tahiti The Islands of Tahiti is home to 118 islands spread among five

archipelagos in the South Pacific Ocean and it’s a destination that will be more popular this year, thanks to a new Disney film, Moana, about a spirited Tahitian teenager. Friendly locals are likely to invite you to sample delicacies

such as Poisson Cru (local fish marinated with lime and coconut and mixed with vegetables), or to proudly share their maohi heritage. Island hopping is an ideal way to discover more of the lesser-known islands, such as Tikehau, Huahine, Rangiroa, and the mystical Marquesas archipelago, 1,500 kilometres from Tahiti and the inspiration for the art of Paul Gauguin, who spent much time here. Modern-day visitors are more likely to stay in one of the

over-water bungalows that have become the destination’s signature accommodation. And when out and about, there’s something to amuse even the most adventurous traveller, from deep-sea fishing to surfing; trekking to canyoning; and golfing to yachting. Meanwhile, helicopters and dive boats await to help visitors catch a view of this paradise from all around.
