ICH looks into future of hotels By April Hutchinson

Hotels with customisable holographic walls and virtual reality (VR) escapism could be how luxury travel looks in the future, according to a new report. As InterContinental Hotels & Resorts turns

70 this year, it commissioned futurist Faith Popcorn to delve into current trends to see what the next 70 years hold. Popcorn believes that by 2086, VR will evolve

to an extent that guests will be able to tailor the design of a hotel and also to access never-before- explored locations and immersive experiences. The New York-based trends predictor and

chief executive of marketing consulting firm BrainReserve also highlighted “clanning experiences”, where VR technology would enable real-time sharing of travel experiences among friends or family spread around the world, thus allowing them to have a “virtual holiday” together. Several leisure and hospitality companies

have already started using VR –Azamara Club Cruises used Oculus Rift technology to create Azamara 3DI to show guests what life was like onboard and on its excursions and Shangri-La was the first luxury hotel group to roll out VR headsets, enabling guests and agents to get a more vivid picture of the global network. “By harnessing VR and the constant flow of

personal likes, dislikes and bio-data, hotels will be able to provide guests with once-in-a-lifetime experiences seamlessly and spontaneously – or so it will seem,” Popcorn said. When it comes to customization, guests will

want to design their hotel environment tailored to their personal aesthetics and needs, from customisable holographic wall art to fully adjustable interior design, the report predicts. They may even be able to pre-order clothes

for their in-room wardrobe, as Popcorn predicts tie-ups with fashion brands that will allow for 3D-printed designer clothing to be created on the spot.
