Chimelong chief named Circus Circus Ambassador


Su Zhigang, founder and chairman/CEO of the Chimelong Group in China, has been named Circus Ambassador of the Year by the Fédération Mondiale du Cirque (World Circus Federation). The theme park entrepreneur travelled to Monaco last month to collect his award at the prestigious Festival International du Cirque du Monte Carlo. Mr Su was awarded the honour in recognition his work promoting the art of the circus in China over the


past few years. Large international circuses are a popular permanent fixture at each of the Chimelong’s two theme park resorts in the Guangdong province, namely Chimelong Tourist Resort in Guangzhou and Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort at Hengqin Island in Zhuhai, bordering Macau. The company also launched the China International Circus Festival in 2013. Founded 16 years ago, other recent winners of Circus Ambassador of the Year include Kenneth Feld, Christel Sembach-Krone, Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Madame Xia Juhua from the Chinese Acrobatics Association.

Hollywood The global ambitions of China’s Dalian Wanda Group were highlighted last month when the real estate and entertainment conglomerate agreed to buy the Hollywood film studio Legendary Entertainment for US$3.5 billion. Wanda, which already boasts a majority stake in the American chain AMC, is the world’s biggest cinema operator. Legendary is the maker of blockbuster hits such as Jurassic World, the Dark Knight Batman trilogy and Godzilla, all of which of course have been enjoyed in AMC outlets. The group’s other entertainment interests include a

fledgling chain of theme parks and resorts, with two major developments in China and many more on the way. The company has already announced it wants to build a park in Australia’s popular tourist hotspot of the Gold Coast in Queensland, an announcement that has met with resistance from existing park operators there. A specially-commissioned report claims that Wanda’s multi-billion dollar park, if it were built in Coomera, would potentially take away a third of trade from Dreamworld, Sea World and Warner Bros Movie World.
