the design team at Nickelodeon to produce the ‘Indiana Jones meets SpongeBob’ concept,” says WhiteWater project manager Michael Ayotte. “Our design department exceeded my expectations yet again and the SpongeBob theming produced by the local team really brings the designs to life.”
Many firsts for Malaysia
The custom-designed SpongeBob AquaPlay RainFortress structure, which is located at the heart of the new area, features nine slides and a host of interactive water features including a giant tipping bucket. In choosing this and the other features of Lost Lagoon, Marimuthu says the Sunway team was guided by guest requests, unique ride experiences and a continuing effort to offer attractions that are the first of their kind in Malaysia. Three of those firsts – Kubarango (Boomerango), Monsoon 360 (Aqualoop) and Jungle Fury (Family Raft Ride) – are finished in the same red, yellow and orange colour scheme as Vuvezela and also come courtesy of WhiteWater. Primeval takes riders on a journey of exciting twists, turns
and drops inside tube slides that weave their way through the trees, hills and gullies of the Lost Lagoon, while Moolalah Adventure River offers a breezy ride through the jungle landscape. Additional WhiteWater slides and attractions include a flatline loop, body slides, kid’s slides and various AquaSpray interactive water features. Other activities awaiting guests at Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon include a 300m-long Explorer’s Trail canopy walk by Adventure Rope Group, a Wild Mouse water coaster from Interlink (opening soon), plus meet and greet opportunities with Nickelodeon heroes including SpongeBob and Patrick, Dora the Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (still in their teens after all these years). Food and beverage outlets cater to local and international palettes, while a range of co-branded Nickelodeon merchandise will keep all fans of the brand happy. Theming throughout the area was designed by
Nickelodeon and executed by Strike Theming and Leisure and Fountain Design and Trading. Conceptual design for the waterpark was provided by Fairmile Pty Ltd. Sunway Lagoon’s own creative team also had a hand in some of the theming, signage and finishing.
Sense of exploration “The new park extension was built using as its infrastructure a mature rainforest and existing rock hills that have been “lost” (as the name suggests) for 24 years,” highlights Marimuthu. “The terrain has a height differential of some 34 metres, which made access and construction difficult, but all of the attractions were designed and built with minimal destruction to the greenery. I believe we have definitely succeeded in retaining the natural beauty and providing visitors with a sense of exploration.” “This was by far one of the most unique projects that I’ve
had the opportunity to manage,” adds Michael Ayotte at WhiteWater. “The landscape presented an extremely challenging task and there was also a lack of accurate site information due to the extremely thick vegetation and undulating topography. With a team approach, our slide path engineers persevered and rose to the challenge. The
