dering tested well while in a consist of assorted rolling stock, and traveled through 22-inch radius curves and No. 4 turnouts smoothly. All the blackened metal RP25-compliant wheelsets were found to be properly gauged, as deter- mined by a National Model Railroad As- sociation Standards Gage. The model’s Kadee metal knuckle couplers were also positioned at the appropriate height. Fi- nally, tipping the scales at 6.1 ounces, the HO-scale Silverside is a little on the heavy side as compared to the NMRA’s suggest- ed weight based on car length calculation (4.375 ounces), but its additional heft did not pose a problem during my test runs. Some freight car gurus in the hobby
may be critical of the lack of the separate- ly applied details previously mentioned. However, the suggested retail prices of Fox Valley’s Silverside gons (sold individually in two different road numbers for $27.95 each or in eight different six-car sets, all with unique road numbers, for $160), are running about $8 less per car than comparable, more fully detailed ready- to-run gondolas presently on the market. Bottom line, considering these cars were run in unit trains that will require mod- elers to purchase multiples, I think the manufacturer wisely chose to sacrifice a few of the minor visual elements to keep the overall investment somewhat more affordable. To that end, Southern Rail- way fans should be quite pleased with this offering. — DAVID OTTE
