Filling out an HO Flat Kit CRAFTSMAN/Lynn Draper

In the process of acquiring

It’s a Flat! Because I did not read the full descripti on of the Bar Mills kit, I was surprised to fi nd that it was a background build- ing, oft en referred to as a “fl at.”

buildings for the namesake town on my HO-scale Fremont & South Park Railroad, I ordered the Ship- yard Brewing Company from Bar Mills Scale Model Works. When I received it, I was shocked to see I had only one-half of a build- ing. I looked at the ads and, sure enough, that is the way it was advertised. I can see how this kit would be a big hit on

most

layouts, but it was useless

on mine. My layout 40 RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN

doesn’t have a back- drop to set a half structure against — city and industrial areas are on penin- sulas with all their buildings’ sides in full view. I just loved the design of this building and knew I had to do something, but what? I had been scratch-

building and kitbash- ing both real and model structures for more than 30 years. I owned a construction company for 25 years doing a lot of remod- eling and new home

Base Structure I used Mt. Albert Scale Lumber 1/16-inch thick sheeti ng for the base structure. It was cut to shape and the windows and door holes were punched into the sheet.
